Details

A gripping story based on the internal moral conflict of a man called Hajji Hassen. This inner conflict can only be understood in the wider social and political context which forms the background of this compelling narrative. The story is set in South Africa and the writer, himself born in India, provides a commentary on racial injustice which is intricately linked with the concept of apartheid. Essop presents entire worlds, and, at the same time, microcosmic glimpses into the complexities and ironies of life and human relationships. 'The Hajji’ won the coveted Olive Schreiner Prize from the English Academy of Southern Africa in 1979 and was later turned into a film. Essop received the Lifetime Achievement Literary Award at the 2018 South Africa Literary Awards. He died in 2019. ON VIDEO: https://www.imdb.com/video/vi2295637273 Adapted from Ahmed Essop's short story by the same name, The Hajji tells a story about brotherly love and betrayal. When Hassen returns home to Fordsburg from his pilgrimage to Mecca he receives a message that his estranged brother Karim, who is seriously ill, wants to reunite with his brother. The strictly religious Hassen still holds a grudge against Karim for having rejected his family and turning his back on their friendship. 132pp 210x149mm
