Esopus 25 Summer 2018
The largest and most dynamic Esopus ever, it includes artist's projects by Noriko Ambe, Paolo Arao, Tina Barney, John Edmonds,Elizabeth Ferry, and Anish Kapoor; new writing by Francine Prose; brand-new installments of the regular series "Guarded Opinions" (art commentary by guards from the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum); "Modern Artifacts" (devoted to MoMA's groundbreaking Junior Council volunteer program); and “Public Access” (featuring never-before-seen gems from the Vladimir Nabakov papers in the New York Public Library’s esteemed Berg Collection). The issue will also include: a portfolio of work by an undiscovered Georgia-based artist brought to our attention by David Naugle (who readers may recall introduced us in 2005 to the then-unknown Mark Hogancamp); a selection of Timothy Leary's Tao Te Ching poems from the Ludlow Santo Domingo collection of psychedelia at Harvard University; an unpublished satirical script from the early ’90s (printed in facsimile) by Jill and Faith Soloway(Transparent); a piece on the teatro povero of the Tuscan villlage of Monticchiello; a suite of song lyrics and images by the Atlanta-based artist Lonnie Holley; and 100 frames from the award-winning 2014 film Force Majeure by Swedish director Ruben Östlund (introduced by Alex Witchel). The issue closes with an audio compilation featuring brand-new songs inspired by jokes from a range of musicians, including Peter Silberman (The Antlers), Alicia Walter, and Joseph Keckler, with an introduction by comedian, actor, and musician Demetri Martin.
