Baggage Reclaimed , a biographical novel, describes the author's efforts to discover why his mother Audrie, a tea planter's daughter who married an Aberdonian Ceylon businessman, never spoke about the tragedies that overtook her during and after the war.

Shortly before she died, Audrie handed him a bundle of faded letters and papers which she'd kept from wartime Ceylon. The letters shine a light on life in colonial Colombo; Alasdair discovers not only that he had a sister, but also what his father did in the war, and what happened the night he died.

Finally, the author also uncovers the possible reason why his mother could never speak about what had happened.
