Chocolate Cake
Two secret gorgers meet in a hotel room while attending a women’s conference (entitled Your New Life Starts Here!) AnnMarie is a simple country girl married to a mechanic, in direct contrast to Delia, a brassy city-dweller whose husband is a wealthy businessman. Inevitably their conversation gets round to their favourite topic - food. However, the funnier their exchanges become, the more we are made poignantly aware of the deprivation and disappointments which have led them to compensate with compulsive over-eating.

This both taut and moving play is set in the office of a Child Welfare Officer and deals with the confrontation of a social worker with a mother whose child has been placed in care. Tension is heightened as the action is interspersed with tapes of the social worker’s notes and the result is a highly convincing and dramatic play. A topical and relevant choice for today with excellent acting roles for two women.

A light and hilarious piece about two very different mothers whose daughters are competing in a beauty contest. As they sit in anxious anticipation of the judges’ verdict, they discuss their children’s attributes and talents.
