This book was the final work of Dr Alfred Horace Davis. It was left as a type - script to his son and by him to Dr Davis's grandson, Dr John Davis. On seeing it, I felt it was worth working on to transform it into a publishable format and this book is the outcome of those efforts. The book was started by Dr Davis as a retirement project some time in the late 1960s. It is not clear when it was finished but the most recent date in the bibliography is 1971, so it must have been finished sometime after then. Beautifully written, it gives a concise review of the development of scientific thought; outlines the history of science from the origins of life through relativity and evolution to the limits of the cosmos; and touches on the development of philosophical and religious thought. The book is also a charming personal account of the path through life of a once deeply religious man, born in the 19th century, who made major contributions to science through the 20th century, questioning his faith along the way. The final section integrates these diverse threads to re-evaluate the enigma of God.
