Dear Departed: Harry Eyres
Dear Departed oscillates between present and past, the living and the dead, Mediterranean idylls and southern English land- and cityscapes. Harry Eyres offers elegies here for departed parents and friends and engagement with a lived reality that balances life and loss.
The first section summons the Roman Gaius Valerius Catullus and the Greek-Alexandrian Constantine Cavafy, interweaving versions and homages with poems from lived experience. The second section is a sequence of love poems, followed by a coming back to life and the present. The final section recalls the poet’s parents in an affectionate laying-to-rest which looks towards new beginnings.
Horace and Me: Life Lessons from an Ancient Poet (Bloomsbury) was shortlisted for the PEN/Ackerley Prize in 2014. Hotel Eliseo (Hearing Eye, 2001) was his first poetry collection.
