Details

- Funded by generous Irish-British grants from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Foras na Gaeilge, the Ulster-Scots Agency and the Gaelic Books Council in Scotland, The Other Tongues is a beautifully produced, groundbreaking and major anthology in a coffee-table-book format, aimed at the general reader in English as well as in Irish, Scots Gaelic and Scots. - With 75 texts spanning three centuries (25 texts in each tongue: poems, prose extracts and songs), this colourful and educative anthology seeks to introduce the general reader to writing in the three minority tongues that coexist with the English language across the North Channel, in Scotland and the nine counties of Ulster. - Each text is accompanied by a striking image, a biographical note and a translation into English, making each two-page spread an elegant but succinct introduction to each author, aimed at the general public rather than a specialist or academic audience. - The anthology also comprises three introductions (one for each language, with translation), an index of authors, a list of illustrations, and suggestions for further reading – making this also an ideal resource for the classroom, both at secondary and university levels. - Drawing on the renowned production values of Irish Pages, the anthology is characterized by design elegance of a high order, in terms of typography, layout, paper and visual imagery. - In the autumn of 2013, the funders of the anthology, along with Irish Pages Ltd, will launch a major publicity and media campaign for the anthology, involving reviews, profiles, interviews and prominent launches in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland
