Socialist Lawyer is the regular publication of the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers. It is a lively, sharply-written legal publication that makes no apology for positioning itself on the left politically. Its regular contributors include the well-known radical lawyers Mike Mansfield QC, solicitor Gareth Peirce, solicitor Phil Shiner and Professor Bill Bowring. It contains comprehensive coverage of the legal challenges to the British government's assaults on civil liberties in the name of the “war on terror”. Other domestic matters featured in recent issues include prison conditions, the treatment of asylum-seekers, and the treatment of children in care. The campaigning organisations INQUEST and Young Legal Aid Lawyers both write regular columns. Its international coverage is extensive, based on direct testimony from lawyers working to defend human rights all over the world.
Recent issues have featured Ukrainian human rights defender Valentina Telychenko,
coverage of the trial of the Miami Five in Cuba, the scandal of Guantanamo Bay,
investigations by lawyers into prison conditions in Turkey, lawyers' protests in
Pakistan against martial law. Legal practitioners, law students and anyone
interested in contemporary legal issues will find it a stimulating read that
provides both legal analysis and political commentary. |
