Aperture

In 2013, Aperture is being reconceived and redesigned to offer a more focused experience of great photography in print while being produced to even higher production values. Now divided into two distinct sections—“Words,” which brings readers the sharpest ideas surrounding the medium, and “Pictures,” the magazine’s superbly printed new visual showcase Aperture will have more pages, more great images, smart new columns, and insightful new writers on the key themes and ideas in photography today.

Each new issue will also explore a theme or movement within photography. Issue 210, Spring 2013, re-launches under the title “Hello, Photography,” a playful nod to Daido Moriyama’s seminal project Bye, Bye Photography. Now divided into two distinct sections—“Words,” which brings readers the sharpest ideas surrounding the medium, and “Pictures,” the magazine’s superbly printed new visual showcase—this issue offers a broad sweep of key issues for photography today.

The next issue, Summer 2013, focuses on “Curiosity.” Taking its name from the Mars Rover, we ask What can we learn by revisiting photography’s role in discovery, experimentation, and exploration? Among its pages readers will find a conversation between artist Trevor Paglen and historian of science Peter Galison; “The Collectors” column, with entries from architects such as John Pawson; and portfolios of work spanning the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, including new work from Thomas Ruff.
